First built during the Southern Han Dynasty (917–971), Dafo Temple was originally named Xinzang Temple. It underwent several name changes throughout the Yuan and Ming dynasties. In accordance with the twenty-eight constellations in traditional Chinese astronomy, Liu Yan, Emperor of the Southern Han Dynasty, erected seven Buddhist temples respectively in the four directions of Guangzhou.
