Constructed by Guangzhou to host the 9th National Games in 2001, Guangzhou Gymnasium is a comprehensive sports venue. It is situated on the south side of Baiyun Avenue at the western foot of Baiyun Mountain in Baiyun District, covering a land area of approximately 240,000 square meters with a total floor area of around 170,000 square meters. Designed by the French architect Paul Andreu, the complex consists of a main stadium, training hall and public activity center. Adopting a sunken architectural layout, it blends harmoniously with the natural scenery of Baiyun Mountain. Its roof is shaped like three clouds, and the venue has over 10,000 spectator seats. It was awarded the China Luban Prize for Construction Project in 2003.
As the host venue for trampoline, men's U18 volleyball events of the 15th National Games and wheelchair basketball events of the National Paralympic Games, Guangzhou Gymnasium also staged the closing ceremony of the 9th National Games.
